The Sprint duo of Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Veronica Campbell-Brown did not let the nation down when they fulfilled its high hopes of medals in the 100m and 200m sprint events. In a true spirit of showmanship and perseverance, Veronica Campbell-Brown took Bronze in the 100m event held on Saturday, August 1st, while Fraser-Pryce took Gold in the same event. Fraser-Pryce returned to take the Silver medal a week later on August 8th.
Personal and season’s bests from four of the competitors in the women’s 100m could not prove enough to match the 10.75 mark Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce posted to win the event. With the nation, and indeed the London crowd, rallying behind her, Shelly-Ann ended the final with an infectious smile of victory after a strong showing in her heats, and semi-finals. Not far behind her was team-mate Veronica Campbell-Brown who posted a season’s best of 10.81 for the bronze medal after being barely clipped by the US’ Carmelita Jeter. The seasoned sprint champion expressedthat she was delighted to be taking home yet another well deserved a medal for her country.
A week later, all eyes turned to the 200m for a hopeful repeat of the 100m glories. Although two medals were not to be, agracious Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won silver behind the US’ Allyson Felix in a personal best time of 21.88. Again, just barely clipped by Carmelita Jeter, Veronica Campbell-Brown placed fourth expressing her happiness for her team-mate, Shelly-Ann, and the winner, complimenting how hard the entire field worked. Both women will next be seen gunning for gold in the 4x100m event where the highly favored Jamaican team will challenge a strong United States contingent.
