Alia Makes Strides in Swimming
10/08/2012 06:16:26 AM
Although many, including the talented swimmer herself, were hoping for a first, second, or third place in the women’s 100m breast stroke, Alia Atkinson swam her way to an equally satisfying kind of victory instead. Placing 4th in the July 30th event, Atkinson successfully brought swimming back into the nation’s forefront with an impressive personal best of 1:06:93, a national record that surpasses even the men’s record for the same event. After improving her personal best several times, and competing in a swim-off for her place in the events finals, Atkinson, who competes with noticeably less resources than her competitors, proved that talent and hard-work are a deadly combination. The underdog, who is no stranger to creating waves in her sport, also competed in the women’s 50m breaststroke where she placed 4th in her heat, and the 200m breast stroke where after producing a national record, was not able to progress to the semi—finals.
